Government Higher Secondary School Nyoma
About Us
Nurturing Excellence in the Heart of Ladakh
Government Higher Secondary School, Nyoma is a premier educational institution serving the students of the remote and strategically important Changthang region of Ladakh. Initially established in 1960, the school was upgraded to Higher Secondary School in 2005 . Located approximately 198 kilometres from Leh, the school stands on the banks of the Indus River and spreads across an expansive 198-kanal campus, providing a distinctive and inspiring setting for learning.
With a present enrolment of around 55 students, the school offers education from Classes IX to XII, with streams in Humanities and Science, along with Vocational Education that provides students with opportunities to develop practical, skill-oriented competencies.
GHSS Nyoma holds a unique position in the region as the only Higher Secondary School in the Lalok area. The school serves as a natural educational hub for several surrounding High Schools, including Puga, Anlay, Chumathang and Likstey, enabling students from these remote areas to continue their higher secondary education closer to their communities.
The significance of Nyoma has grown further with its emergence as the District Headquarters of the newly created Changthang District, the largest district in Ladakh. In this evolving regional landscape, GHSS Nyoma aspires to play an important role in developing the human capital of Changthang by providing young learners with quality education, modern skills and opportunities for all-round development.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At GHSS Nyoma, we believe that education extends beyond textbooks and examinations. Alongside our strong focus on academic excellence, we place equal emphasis on sports, co-curricular activities, creativity, leadership, teamwork and character building. Our students are encouraged to explore their talents, participate actively and develop the confidence to meet the challenges of a changing world.
The school provides a vibrant residential environment through two dedicated hostels—one for boys and one for girls. The residential setup enables students from distant and remote villages to access higher secondary education while fostering discipline, independence, camaraderie and a strong sense of community.
A Community of Learners
The school community is organised into three Houses—Singay Namgyal, Jamyang Namgyal and Deldan Namgyal. The House system encourages healthy competition, cooperation, leadership and participation across academic, sporting and cultural activities.
Situated at the intersection of tradition and modernity, GHSS Nyoma seeks to nurture learners who are academically capable, socially responsible and deeply connected to the cultural and environmental heritage of Ladakh. Our endeavour is to equip the young generation of Changthang with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to contribute to the harmonious and sustainable development of Changthang and Ladakh.
GHSS Nyoma is more than a school—it is a growing centre of learning, opportunity and hope for the young minds of Changthang.
